South America Assembly Southern Edition 2019

Interpreting the challenges of the hydrocarbon industry

One agency, two professionals, top-notch service. Cultures Connection interpreted at the South America Assembly Southern Edition, held in Argentina.

On September 10-11, the South America Assembly held its eighth consecutive annual convention in Argentina. Once again, Cultures Connection was there to provide simultaneous interpretation services. Technical explanations from the hydrocarbon industry were translated from Spanish to English, and vice-versa, thanks to the work of two professional interpreters, reaching 280 executives from 160 organizations seeking to understand and discuss energy investment opportunities in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay, and Uruguay.

This year’s event, held at the Alvear Icon Hotel in Buenos Aires, coincides with a period of presidential elections in the region, notably in Argentina, Uruguay, and Bolivia. The results of these elections will no doubt significantly impact the future of the industry in the continent, which is still in its early stages of development, with abundant resources yet to be developed and stability in international oil and gas price markets.

An interpretation team in Argentina

The South America Assembly once again turned to Cultures Connection to provide the interpretation services for the event. From its offices in Buenos Aires, drawing on its experience providing services for large scale events, the agency worked with two local Spanish-English interpreters to reach an international audience that included goverment representatives from Argentina and Uruguay, as well as executives from the major players in the private sector such as Madalena Energy, Pan American Energy, Tecpetrol, Gazprom, Pampa Energía, Phoenix Global Resources, Aggreko, Halliburton, PowerChina and Maglan Capital.

These professionals were chosen based on their training and experience in English both in the petroleum and hydrocarbon industry as well as in the domain of business, given that the presentations covered topics as interconnected and diverse as upstream and midstream resource exploitation, renewable energy, financing, investment, and infrastructure.

Furthermore, thanks to its extensive network of vendors, Cultures Connection was able to provide the necessary translation booth and audio equipment, which were set up in a large conference room at the Alvear Icon. This ensured that the presentations given by the 55 experts at the event were accurately heard, in both languages, by the 300 attendees.

Simultaneous interpretation

Simulatenous interpretation consists of instantantly translating and adapting the words spoken by the speaker from one language to another in real-time. It is a common practice at this type of convention, where a large number of important individuals have a packed agenda to be covered in one or two days. Translation takes up no extra time, and everyone benefits from it simultaneously.

It requires the use of specialized technology, and would not possible without the translation booths where the interpreters can hear the discussion without interference, or the headphones so that the audience can hear the interpretation immediately and clearly.

These services made it possible for some of the biggest names in the gas and petroleum industry to examine issues such as the availability of resources in the region, the current status of technology and human resources needed for their development, the necessary cooperation between local and foreign enterprises to bring it to fruition, and the importance of efficency as well as sustainability.

According to Moody’s, the global business and financial credit risk company, the global socio-economic environment in Latin America for this market is favorable to financing in the 2019-2020 period. The South America Assembly 2019 in Buenos Aires provided an opportunity for investors, vendors, and executives, to get up to date on the latest happenings in the region’s energy industry, and to connect and discuss possible business opportunities that build on the available possibilities. Cultures Connection, one of the most experienced interpretation agencies in Argentina and the world, make the meeting possible.
